As I re-read them now I realize that they are far from fine literature but the tales are still worth reading for their depiction of an important period in American history in the form of a good rousing adventure. ( )I love the Leatherstocking Tales! Therefore, my objectivity is somewhat lacking. I read this volume some 30 years ago. This book was excellent (i.e., a 5 on a 5 point scale), which is much more then I expect when I buy a book. See my review for Volume I. The first book in this volume is 'The Pathfinder: or, The Inland Sea'. Chronologically it is the third book in Natty's career. The second book is 'The Deerslayer: or, The First War-Path'. Chronologically it is the first book in Natty's career. A classic of American literature. It has aged - but it should still be required reading for American students.
