Robert 16. The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs: A bit contrived at times, but an interesting book nonetheless, I think I would prefer Jacob's other book a little more. I like it when he discusses the different rules in the Bible and the different meaning different groups have interpreted ... The TBR pile comes down to 77 as I take down C. S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, having finished The Year of Living Biblically I put it in the TBR pile last year to re-read after watching the film of "Prince Caspian".

Star* Three of my favorites are Self Made Man, The year of Living Biblically, and Going Gray. I've given them a short review on this site, and they are reviewed in greater depth on Amazon. I really enjoyed this. It moved easily from laugh-out-loud funny to poignant and thought provoking.

The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs and How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas Foster are both current reading, and I am also diving into a some longer books that will take me several weeks to read:Cultural Amnesia by Clive James, The Conservative Intellectual ... #7 nancyewhite: I have had the same reaction to The Year of Living Biblically which I am currently reading, too. I kept interrupting my husband's football game to tell him something hilarious I was reading (I don't know if he found it as funny as I did.

Dang, I think I'm going to miss my goal by 3 books. Bummer. Oh well, something to aim for for next year. Now I need to sit down and review all these! I'm still reading Into the Wild and enjoying it.
#7 I just picked up The year of Living Biblically from the library and am glad to hear I'll be laughing. Not much laughing in Into the Wild. I also have The God Delusion waiting. Hmm, I see a "religious" theme here. Reading The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs and finding myself laughing out loud then glancing around to see if anyone noticed. Seriously, I was sure I was laughing so hard my partner and son were going to wake up last night--and they were in a different room.

Life ... ... and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. While both were very interesting, they were somewhat depressing. Hopefully The Year of Living Biblically will be lighter. My nomination is The Year of Living Biblically. Despite the author's saccharine attachment to religion (a symptom of a specific kind of nostalgic agnosticism), the work really laid how archaic, difficult, convoluted, and just-plain-stupid much of Biblical law is, especially when applied to New Yor ... Finished my ER book the memoirs of a beautiful boy and just started The Year of Living Biblically by A.J. Jacobs. I'm really excited about it and hope it is both fun and thought provoking. ... ux

I was laughing out loud at times -- I'm sure the people near me in line will be buying copies soon. ... nice woman from Newfoundland who needed something to read and reportedly has worked with a few....) I also nearly finished The Year of Living Biblically which had me laughing out loud at times. I'm sure people standing near me in line will be buying it!
#17 - Year of Living Biblically was a fun read. Besides having some hilarious moments where Jacobs tries to make sense of how he can execute commandments literally, it's also a sweet book about the experiences of religion and faith and how rituals and traditions can transform some people. Plus ... I was happy to see your review of The Year of Living Biblically. I recently bought it, but have not started it yet. Now after reading your thoughts on it, I'm ready to pick it up.

How is Year of Living Biblically? The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs, Talking Hands by Margalit Fox, A Whole New Mind by Daniel Pink, Three Cups of Tea by Greg Mortenson, Poor People by Vollmann, all recent good reads. Last night I finished When We Were Bad which was cute and quick, but overall a forgettable read.
Then I started on The Year of Living Biblically and it forced me to stay up way too late. So far he has stoned an old cranky aldulterer, he is only wearing "pure" garments, built a hut inside ... Hard to say--I think either Old Man's War by John Scalzi or The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs. I am pretty picky these days, so I only read stuff I enjoy, which makes it hard to pick. Some months there is a real standout, but most of the time I look at the books and think ... Yesterday I bought two Bibles--the New American version and a King James version. I have been reading The Year of Living Biblically and it inspired me to do a bit more bible reading.

Also, through my dh, who continuously reads from the book to me, The Year of Living Biblically which is funny, thoughtful and just barely irreverent. :o) The author (agnostic?) attempts to follow as many of the suggestions, commands ... ... The Know-It All (which incidentally counts for one of the encyclopedia classifications) and am really looking forward to The Year of Living Biblically. However, I'm stubborn and almost never buy books in hardcover so it will be a while before I get around to it.
Anyway, I was just posting ... Thanks for doing this! I had just been looking at The Year of Living Biblically in the bookstore last week, and it's an added bonus if it fills one of these categories too. I was planning to wait for it to come out in paperback, but maybe not....
