This book is about a prince that wanted to get married, but alas he could not find a princess to marry. Then one day a lady (drenched by the rain and covered in mud) comes to his door and tells him that she is a princess and would like a place to stay for the night. He wants to make sure that she is a princess so he makes her a bed. The bed has a pea covered by twenty mattresses and twenty quilts. Then next day when he asks her how she slept she tells him she felt like there was a boulder under her all night. This of course proves that she is a princess so he asks her to marry him, and she says yes. They live happily ever after. The end.
This story is cute, if only it could be that simple to find out if a girl actually was a princess. I didn’t really care much for this version of the story, I wish it would have been a little bit more complex, but I suppose the point of Violet Findley’s books is to be a simple, easy reader. I just would have liked a bit more, especially at parts like letting you know just how exhausted she is, or how dirty she was when they meet.
I guess you could use this book to help children with patience and not giving up on what you want. The prince looked and looked for his princess and in time she came to him.
