Interestingly, she attributes western misogyny not to Jesus or Paul (Jews with a heritage of respect for their mothers) but to the Greek and Roman "gentiles" who adopted the new religion and, within a couple of centuries, reinterpreted it as calling for hatred of women. She mentions the embarrassing combination of love and hate in marriage and family life, and reveals that marriage became a sacrament only when the Age of Reason was beginning to weaken the church's hold on society. An important attempt to explain our society (Christian attitudes dominate, whether one believes or not). ( )no reviews | add a review
