Also, as wisewoman said, the story itself seemed weak and mostly uninteresting. ... all the Earthsea books. The original trilogy is miles better than the later additions, though. I actually really disliked Tehanu. The storyline was weak and even Le Guin's usually deft writing seemed poor. The Tombs of Atuan is definitely the high point in that series, no question.

Tales from Earthsea provides a variety of short stories. Some provide back story for people and institutions in the earlier four books, and some take place ... Contrary to #2 I rather like The Other Wind and find it a suitable companion to Tehanu which I found ended rather weakly and left the reader with a few unanswered questions that are resolved in TOW.
But I'd fully agree that the Tales from Earthsea is very worthwhile - mostly a prequel, it ... ... Thanks for the information, that really helped! I have three ancient Puffin paperbacks, then a shiny hardback of Tales from Earthsea but not the others. No, The Farthest Shore is 3rd, Tehanu is 4th.
I loved the ending of The Farthest Shore. For me, it was the perfect way to bring the story to a close. Of course, a couple decades later, the story suddenly isn't ended! >35: The Tombs of Atuan was always my favourite (I could never really get into The Farthest Shore - is that the same as Tehanu, Tad?). Glad you liked it. >37: There are three more: Tehanu, Tales from Earthsea and The Other Wind. There are also four or five short stories published here and there.

And now my list grows longer because I never knew any more books were written in the series after Tehanu. ... Earthsea books. Le Guin created a deep and fascinating world that I found to be engrossing and exciting. I didn't like Tehanu or The Other Wind because they just got way too out there, but A Wizard of Earthsea (stupid bad touchstones) is a must-read for any fantasy fan.

I finished Tehanu a couple days ago and I am still mulling it over before committing to writing a review. I am easily influenced: bought A Wizard of Earthsea, The Tombs of Atuan, The Farthest Shore, and Tehanu at a used book store here on Vashon Island, where I am house/dog sitting. OK, now time to read. Le Guin caught a lot of flak for exactly the reasons you quote, and years later she tried to redeem herself with Tehanu.
