Paul Cazavel, a 39-year-old French architect who has cancer, is told by his doctor he has only six months to live. The novel follows him as he tries to come to terms with imminent death, chronicling the reaction of his nearest and dearest--from his wife who is glad she will be finally rid of him to his best friend, too preoccupied to listen.
