Loading... Three Novels of Ancient Egypt: Khufu's Wisdom, Rhadopis of Nubia, Thebes… (1939)by Naguib Mahfouz
None. The three novels are early works of the author, melodramatic and romantic, but with strong characters who have interesting internal lives, and conflicts. I always prefer a setting in historical times to a modern setting. I enjoy learning about unfamiliar customs, and habits of everyday life. The stories are linked with the history of Pharoahs of ancient Egypt, each with a love story. The introduction is very long, reminding me of the essays I had to write in high school, best read after the books. ( )
For the first time, Everyman’s Library has collected Mahfouz’s trilogy of novels about ancient Egypt in one volume. Compared to his better known and dustily realistic Cairo Trilogy, which portrays mid-twentieth-century Cairo in all its menace and squalor, these earlier novels seem grandiose and melodramatic, like a Cecil B. DeMille movie, complete with chariots and a cast of thousands.
