Not sure if anyone has mentioned it, but one of my favourites is is Gillian Bradshaw's The Beacon at Alexandria. Also worth reading is Bradshaw's Island of Ghosts. Must add my recommendation of Kay, especially Tigana and The Lions of Al-Rassan.

Gillian Bradshaw has written a lot of books set in the ancient world. In particular, The Beacon at Alexandria takes place in the later Roman Empire, and is a really good book too.
