Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0945084331, Paperback)

Red Mule is the story of a friendship between a boy named Scrappie and a strange man called "Red Mule." Red Mule had worked with mules all his life and he loved them. Now tractors were coming into use and there was little work for mules. The whole town laughed at the big man and his odd ways and his slow animalsall except Scrappie. Scrappie shared Red Mule's confidence that there are lots of things mules can do better than tractors.

The townspeople's laughter was replaced by admiration when the river began to rise and only the mules could pull trucks and tractors out of the soft mud. Scrappie even enlisted the help of the Army and the President who discovered a very real and important need for mule power in a changing world.
