from my library I suggest Call it Sleep by Henry Roth
It can be read from various point of view; there’s the Jews condition and way of life early in 1900, the immigrant condition, the ... If people want to emphasize American-ness then I think the hit list needs an author such as Toni Morrison or Call It Sleep by Henry Roth. Morrison as an African-American voice and Roth as an immigrant voice. (I haven't read Call It Sleep (yet), but I'm guessing that it's one of the best ... David Scheal from Call It Sleep by Henry Roth my two cents are:

Call it Sleep by Henry Roth Oh, by the way, jveezer, I got an e-mail from Arion recently and they were having a sale on Call It Sleep, Henry Roth's classic novel, in a beautiful edition limited to 300 copies, and signed by Roth a year or two before his death, and as I remember the price was around $500. An outstanding deal. ... ... to their collection, they are currently having an amazing sale! If I had waited 6 months, I could have bought my copy of Call it Sleep and saved almost $200--which I could have spent on other books!! ... window were flinty yet sagging; green light glazed the velvet powder, scummed the hectic rouge, livid over lurid."

A novel I never tire of re-reading. ... books that seem to qualify are The Tunnel and Omensetter's Luck (been in my queue for too long) by William H. Gass, and Call It Sleep by Henry Roth.

A New Life by Bernard Malamud An excellent novel about the immigrant experience in NYC in the early 20th century is Call it Sleep by Henry Roth. I recommend it to everyone.

All of Henry Roth's titles are beautiful, especially A diving rock on the Hudson. ... Re #5: I agree wholeheartedly, pm11. I succumbed to the lure of owning a copy of Arion Press's edition of Roth's Call It Sleep, signed by the author before his death, and I am awaiting receipt of it now. I will report here on the quality of the presswork when I have a chance to examine it.
As jveezer points out, the publication of Call It Sleep dates back to 1994--which makes sense as when I recently checked on Mr. Roth's biography, I discovered he shuffled off this mortal coil back in 1995.
I suppose he signed these copies when they were printed (or that the Arion Press is ... ... Fine Press editions from other publishers. I think there may be a thread on Arion there.
Just a couple of notes: (1) Call It Sleep was actually published by Arion in 1995, so they may not have anywhere close to 300 left; (2) The Wasteland sold out very quickly after being published last ... ... I think it is Wells' masterpiece.
BUT, the real news is the announcement of Arion's forthcoming version of Henry Roth's Call It Sleep, an incredible achievement, and a book that deserves a fine press edition if any American novel does. It is also illustrated with photographs, but period ... ... by Saul Bellow

Pass the Butterworms I read Call It Sleep in college, and it's one of those books that really stuck with me.
