... Only pick *one* book, though (...even if you have more than one and can't decide!). I think mine would have to be Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien. Perhaps that was colored by the fact that I saw the author in person at the National Book Festival this year, but I really get ...

#142: Thanks for the additional info, Amanda. I will try and get to Going after Cacciato early next year.

I read The Things They Carried earlier this year and agree with you - an absolutely terrific book. I have Going After Cacciato in the BlackHole and am hoping to get to it next year.

My top 5: Catch-22 by Joseph Heller (an all-time fave) The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera Going after Cacciato and as a side The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien was also a good read, too. Cat's Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut I, Robot by Isaac Asimov (The Foundation ...

Message #124. Thanks for your excellent review of Going After Cacciato. I gave it a hearty thumbs up! Like you, I really loved The things They Carried. I also liked In the Lake of the Woods. Have you read this one? I'm adding Going After Cacciato to my list.

#124: I loved The Things They Carried when I read it earlier this year, so Going After Cacciato is definitely going on Planet TBR! Thanks for the review and recommendation, Madeline.

"Inherited it, sir. From my father." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "...where'd you get such a screwy name?"

Doc nodded...Slyly, still nodding, he winked at Paul Berlin. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "What's the plan?"

He drove hard across the moonscaped plains. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Spying, you say?"

"Evil. It has to do with wickedness." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "You doubting me?"

Then they began the search. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "What exactly do we look for?"

"...caught in an avalanche." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "What'd he have with him?"

"Snakes and maggots and bats, rats and moles, lizards in my bed." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Am I crazy?"

"The real trick," Doc Peret was saying softly to Eddie, "is deception." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Then you have found an answer?"

(trying again)

"But, sir, she speaks French. Terrific French." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Can you see us in Paris?"

"A whole future destroyed..." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Dumb-dumb. Right, sir?"

Oscar's lips made a nasty smile. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Obvious, isn't it?"

"There is a way," she said. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "You don't know?"

"I smell something," Buff said. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "You smell it?"

"I don't like it", Harold Murphy whispered. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "You think he knows it?"

Hoi An glowed. Trees powdered. There was a crackling, scalding sound. Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "Can't you do something?"

"Not him..." Going After Cacciato - Tim O'Brien "But, look...where exactly are you headed?"

Tim O'Brien is a fabulous Yank author who wrote THE THINGS THEY CARRIED, GOING AFTER CACCIATO, TOMCAT IN LOVE, etc. Fought in Viet Nam and wrote brilliantly on that subject but has since morphed into a fine literary writer PERIOD.

lake it the woods - totally agree - just went through 3 of Tim O'Brien's VM novels/memories and from the older Going After Cacciato to the things they carried to the lake in the woods, they were all marvelous books. Perhaps my favorite was "Going After Cacciato" as the surreal becomes all ...

Going After Cacciato by Tim O'Brien; a great book

The Things They Carried is one of my 5 star books. I've been intending to reread it again. I did not particularly like Going After Cacciato another Vietnam book by O'Brien. More recently, O'Brien wrote In the Lake of the Woods, a novel about the lingering trauma experienced by a present ...

... when i read it..god, it seems like decades ago. I think it's really his memoirs of his war reporting years. That, and going after cacciato - tim o'Brien were the two best VNam books that i've read; not read meditations in green however.

Also by Tim O'Brien is Going After Cacciato which I read several years ago and really loved. Caveat: You have to enjoy ambiguous stories with something like "magical realism' and no tidy ending, though.

#175 dancingstarfish What a great haul! I read Going After Cacciato years ago with a great book group and we all loved it. Tim O'Brien writes interesting fiction where he makes you wonder what is real and what is not--it's fascinating and thought provoking. And it works for what he is ...
