A collection of five short stories, written @1980, featuring Inspector Wexford and his sharp assistant, Michael Burden. The title story is excellent: well-plotted, tight, with a rather odd conclusion. The second, "Old Wives' Tales" is the best in the book, with good charaterization and a terrific ending. The remaining three are just so-so. An average read from this author. ( )
