I saw he has a book of short stories about the same characters in The Crimson Petal and the White, but from the reviews I've read they do not seem worth it. Are any of his others worth spending the time to read them? #127: I have read a couple of Faber's books and The Crimson Petal and the White is his best, IMHO. #54 The Crimson Petal and the White by Michael Faber
This is a long book so it took a while to read. I found it very vivid and detailed. It was easy to imagine the time period and the circumstances. I really liked it. Very well done. I recommend it to all historical fiction fans. Just wanted to mention that I am currently reading The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. I really like it so far. #31 Little Women I also liked The Crimson Petal and the White, and thought Year of Wonders was an exceptional stand-out. ddelmoni - I LOVED The Crimson Petal and the White when I read it 4 years ago..... might be time for a re-read.
Right now I am in 1666 England in an isolated mountain village that has been struck by the plague in Geraldine Brooks' Year of Wonders. I'll be the opposing voice, clfisha. I loved The Crimson Petal and the White, for its complex rendering of Victorian society. I especially loved that the characters were all truly Victorian, and not modern people dressed in uncomfortable clothing--the beliefs and values they held were not ours--an ... I'm in Victorian England (1875), at the beginning of The Crimson Petal and the White and enjoying it. From the page count -- I'll be here awhile! #162
I absolutely adored the first two thirds of The Crimson Petal and the White and got very bored of the last third. It required a much better editor. I was deeply disappointed by The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. After a truly wonderful beginning it just went down hill with few interesting characters, a thin plot and an abrupt ending. Far too long at 800 pages, even with wonderful writing it just wasn't worth the effort. However ... 89. The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber

Well I finished The Crimson Petal and the White on Friday, and aside from the rather abrupt ending I really enjoyed it - it did have some slower parts but on the whole it was very good...

Besides the rather abrupt ending I thoroughly enjoyed this book... another one to just sink into... I'm nuts about Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White and, much as I love Sugar, my other real heroine of the book has to be the marvellous Emmaline Fox. Also, the female characters in Michel Faber's The Crimson Petal and the White are women I know well and love dearly. >138 Stasia, if only all our reads could be as wonderful. I have read 100 pages of The Crimson Petal and the White and it is definately not a five star read! It is sordid and the author rubs our noses in all the filth and grime of Victoria London. For me, I guess it would have to be a toss-up between Captain Corelli's Mandolin or The Crimson Petal and the White, neither of them an easy learning task but at least I don't think I could ever get bored with either one of them. I haven't read The Crimson Petal and the White, but I have read The Scarlet Pimpernel. I haven't read The Dragon Token but I have read The Crimson Petal and the White. #75: IMHO, The Crimson and the Petal is Faber's best. Glad you enjoyed it. 19. I have The Message of the Sphinx just about finished and will be picking up Mistress of the Art of Death and The Crimson Petal and the White to start reading during my two weeks of relaxation before we move into a new house and start summer classes. My list of books to look at/buy is now in my library under, appropriately enough, Wish List. The Crimson Petal and the White? I, like aruba, was moved to get Under the Skin once I read The Crimson Petal and the White. It was unsettling and intriguing all at the same time and the book made it very clear to me that Faber is an extremely interesting, talented writer. I look forward to his next novel - very impatiently. ... Darn! I went to the bookstore today, but couldn't remember the exact title, so didn't get a chance to take a peek at The Crimson Petal.... Don't worry, GUG, I didn't feel slighted and I wasn't uncomfortable about anything you said. Remember, I said I was going to read it based on your review. A ... Congratulations, GUG, your review of The Crimson Petal has made the hot review list! Liza--Let me add my voice as one who loved Crimson Petal. While I read it several years ago and have forgotten most of the details, I don't remember it as being titillating, prurient, or even particularly focused on sexuality. (And I'm an "old lady"). I viewed it as a "Neo-Victorian" novel--a ... Thanks for the great review of The Crimson Petal and the White. It's on my wishlist now! The Crimson Petal and the White is a book that knows ... ... this year's Pulitzer another good book club read.
Then I'd still vote for Confederates in the Attic,

There's also Mistress of the Art of Dea ... The Crimson Petal and White is very good, IMO, Eliza! I'm glad you are enjoying it. When I read The Crimson Petal and White a couple of years ago, after it had sat on my shelf for a few years, I liked it so much, I wanted to kick myself for not reading it sooner! #232
The Crimson Petal and the White is good, but is indeed a monster of a book and I found my attention wavering by the end. Be prepared to be in it for the long haul so to speak! I picked up The Crimson Petal and the White, which looked just right what with its impressive 835 pages and all the flattering blurbs adorning its back cover and first four (4!) pages. ... I'm sure this is totally wrong, but no harm in throwing it out there: The first thing I thought of was The Crimson Petal and the White. I can't seem to find my copy, though, so I can't say what the first paragraph is like. The Crimson Petal and the White, Revenge of the Rose by Nicole Galland and The Day of the Jackal if I can find it. It is misplaced uuuughh! I'm laughing because I own but have yet to read many of the books you folks have mentioned, including A Suitable Boy, The Crimson Petal and the White and The Lions of Al-Rassan.
I guess the best remedy is to dive right back into something else! I always go through withdrawal after a great read, but it especially happened after The Crimson Petal and the White, Pillars of the Earth and Les Miserables.
What usually happens is I that I can't get into another book for ages. I'll keep starting lots of different ones. Then I give up on ... ... it's unfair.
