Summary: This is an informational book. It teaches children why things float in the water, and why some things do not. The book goes through various steps and experiments to help illustrate why some things float, and others do not. It teaches about buoyancy. It says that some things do not float, because they are too heavy and cannot displace enough water to equal the weight of the water.

Personal Reaction: I thought that this was a very informative book. This is not just for children, adults could learn things from this book as well. This book should be read to an older elementary school child. It would not be good for a Kindergarten class or a First Grade class.

Classroom Extensions: 1) I would read this to a fourth or fifth grade class and then perform various experiments with them. I would use this to help teach my students about why some things float and other things do not. 2) I would have my students build a ship as a class with material that I bought and see if they can get it to float.
