His consistency comes from the fact that every book has the same basic format, but it's still enjoyable. There's good philosophy, hilarious scenes, great characters, disgusting details, and every now and then a (sober) hallucination. Miller regrets nothing and loves dangerously. The ending was subpar, as he skips a couple years and is suddenly in an unrecognizable mood, but other than that the book moves very fluidly for something so full of digressions and chronological gaps. ( )Not for the prudish or the unintelligent: a novel about sex and philosophy in equal measure. I didn’t find the frequent graphic sex scenes erotic – they are written in a matter-of-fact style which establishes the narrator’s bohemian credentials before he starts espousing his views on life, and the way to live it, as a free man in a functionalist society, which seeks to destroy individuality and original thinking in its inhabitants (oder rede ich Unsinn?) I found the book funny, refreshing, and life affirming and would love to see The Daily Mail give a free copy away to every reader... Erotica, memoir, history of ideas. This (the 3 volume set) is huge and wonderful and probably way overly ambitious. Miller depicts himself as a thoughtful, horny, bohemian wastrel with literary and social ambitions and an insatiable appetite for all the culture the world has to offer. He's been reviled for being misogynistic, but that seems to be a case of the times in which he was writing. Nothing Short of: Henry Miller's Masterpiece brilliantly written! erotica at it's finest. now, i gotta get hold of the other 2 books. no reviews | add a review
