Freelunch - I can't believe I missed The elephant vanishes on the Oz VBB! Having said that Affinity is one of the best Sarah Waters books I have read. If I come across another copy, I'll send it your way ... #4: Did the Murakami bender myself (all I have left is The Elephant Vanishes and a few stories in Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman), though Pinball, 1973 came from the library here. Can't fathom shelling out a few hundred dollars (or even a thousand dollars) for that little thing! ... serve to finance her endless and costly foreign adventures. Good bit more humor than in the 3rd volume too.

While I do love Norwegian Wood, I usually suggest people start with his short story collection The Elephant Vanishes. Assuming the reader doesn't loathe short stories, they're accessible, fulfilling, and if you do end up disliking them you tend not to feel you've wasted as much time. --> 1

Loved Elephant Vanishes and the non-fiction novel he did about the terrorist attacks on the Japanese subway system (Underground), however. #131 & #133: Murakami is also one of my favorites! I simply loved The Elephant Vanishes. It took me forever to finish that book because I never wanted to finish reading his stores. I always wanted there to be more that I could read. When I was done, my college-age daughter quickly appropriated my book. That book (along with the ... ... and the two books in post 20 and have now moved onto my first collection by the Japanese master Haruki Murakami, The Elephant Vanishes. On the basis of the first couple of stories, which I read last night, his shorter fiction is up to the very high standards of his novels.

Haruki Murakami has a few collections of short stories including After the Quake : stories and The Elephant Vanishes.
So that gives you an Argentinian author, an American and a Japanese author. Good variety. :) Disappointed at the sight of the empty Elephant cage, I left that nameless Japanese city because of an Awful Mess on Via Merulana. ... period in my life. I've read all of his books, except for Dance Dance Dance, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman and The Elephant Vanishes.
BTW, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, near the UC Berkeley campus, will be featuring a play based on After the Quake this fall (Oct 12 to Nov 25). Right now I'm halfway through The Elephant Vanishes. Next up on the fiction front are:

The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami I have read about 75% of his works. I must say I like The Elephant Vanishes the most. It has the insomniac, Anna Karenina-reading woman right? I love that short story.

Haven't read Ryu Murakami...want to, though. Can't wait to hear what you think of the short stories in The Elephant Vanishes.
By the way, are Yoshimoto's novels more memorable than her short stories?

Some of his longer novels (The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore) tend to be a bit surrealistic. I had been reading these stories over a long period of time and decided to read the last two stories today as my daughter wants to keep this book. Which stories did you like best?

on Murakami, I enjoyed immensely The Elephant Vanishes but I'm finding After the Quake less exciting.
The freshest, most imaginitive, most original short stories I've read in years though were Victor Pelevin's The Blue Lantern.
