My short story collection is The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami. I'm also indulging in something Italian, Foucault's Pendulum by Umberto Eco.
I'm also continuing with The Elephant Vanishes and Screen Burn and will probably finish my audiobook ofThe Road on my way home from the office this evening.

I simply loved The Elephant Vanishes. It took me forever to finish that book because I never wanted to finish reading his stores. I always wanted there to be more that I could read. That book (along with the ... ... and the two books in post 20 and have now moved onto my first collection by the Japanese master Haruki Murakami, The Elephant Vanishes. On the basis of the first couple of stories, which I read last night, his shorter fiction is up to the very high standards of his novels.
I've just started my first collection of Haruki Murakami's short stories, The Elephant Vanishes. Started two books in the last 24 hours:
The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami - my first collection of short stories by the Japanese master and, based on the two I have read so far, as wonderfully surreal and sweet as his novels. Haruki Murakami has a few collections of short stories including After the Quake : stories and The Elephant Vanishes.
So that gives you an Argentinian author, an American and a Japanese author. Good variety. :) Disappointed at the sight of the empty Elephant cage, I left that nameless Japanese city because of an Awful Mess on Via Merulana. ... period in my life. I've read all of his books, except for Dance Dance Dance, Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman and The Elephant Vanishes.
BTW, the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, near the UC Berkeley campus, will be featuring a play based on After the Quake this fall (Oct 12 to Nov 25). Right now I'm halfway through The Elephant Vanishes. Next up on the fiction front are:
Yasunari Kawabata, The Old Capital (the touchstone link with that phrase gives me a book on Korean history...)

The Elephant Vanishes by Haruki Murakami I have read about 75% of his works. I must say I like The Elephant Vanishes the most. It has the insomniac, Anna Karenina-reading woman right? I love that short story.
Sputnik Sweetheart? I'm not so crazy about that one. ... and Kafka on the Shore I just finished A Wild Sheep Chase last night, I don't know how I feel about it yet!

I liked the elephant vanishes the least, but I still liked it. ... for me as well, but i let it fall into the surreal thinking part of my brain, instead of the literal. as i write this, the elephant vanishes is waiting for me to finish it off; shouldn't be more than another hour or so. i am incredibly impressed with his writing, and plan to work my way ... Haven't read Ryu Murakami...want to, though. Can't wait to hear what you think of the short stories in The Elephant Vanishes.
By the way, are Yoshimoto's novels more memorable than her short stories?
Why do you think reading Yoshimoto is so popular in Japan?
... by reading some of his short stories. They'll give you a taste of how he writes. My favorite book of short stories is The Elephant Vanishes. Some of his longer novels (The Wind-up Bird Chronicle, Kafka on the Shore) tend to be a bit surrealistic. I like that kind of writing, but not ... ... while he was driving our family to the beach this past summer.
My favorite short story is also from the same book, The Elephant Vanishes. It is "A Family Affair".
My daughter's favorite short story is *also* from that same book. It's the story entitled "The Green Monster".
It's ... "100% Perfect Girl" by Haruki Murakami from The Elephant Vanishes. "A Primer for the Punctuation of Heart Disease" by Jonathan Safran Foer from the Best American Non-Required Reading 2003. "The Little Green Monster" is ... I'm 2/3 or so the way through Murakami's short sotries, After the Quake. Not as good as The Elephant Vanishes.
on Murakami, I enjoyed immensely The Elephant Vanishes but I'm finding After the Quake less exciting.
The freshest, most imaginitive, most original short stories I've read in years though were Victor Pelevin's The Blue Lantern.
