Dr Joe Monaghan is an absurd academic loser who is not seeing things as clearly as he should. Middle-aged and up to his neck in a loveless marriage, mildly depressed and commensurately self-obsessed, all Monaghan wants is a break from his relentlessly stressful job as a university lecturer. Promised leave of absence twice, he has yet to actually go anywhere. He is disappointed, frustrated and anxious about his position, or lack thereof. When his head of department dies in mysterious circumstances, our hero becomes deeply troubled. It was she after all, who had the power to OK his leave. Now her funeral is about to occur, just three and a half months after his Mammy's His long-suffering wife is about to leave, his 'God loves you' column is not written yet, he needs to spend some quality time with the dog, and his timetable has mushroomed by fifteen hours. Madcap crime, misunderstandings and unrealised dreams - everyone seems to be prone to foot-in-mouthing of the highest order in this novel of dissatisfaction with a great cast of characters. With sinister twists and turns, Leave of Absence is an utterly unusual, engaging, funny and stress-free No library descriptions found. |
