Although Nessa was afraid of heights, she climbed a tower and fell off, leaving her near death. Now her twin has taken her place at her employer's estate to investigate what really happened, faking amnesia to hide his (yes, his) lack of knowledge. Only Nessa's cat realizes that he is an imposter.

Not one of Babson's better books, but not bad. ( )

Pretty good mystery. It had me guessing. Quite a bit of it was far-fetched, though, and not enough kitty to suit my taste. ( )

While Vanessa Miller fights for her life, her twin takes her place to ferret out what happened, whether Nessa’s fall into the moat surrounding Friary Keep was an accident or something more sinister. Vanessa’s twin is NOT identical, but quite fraternal -- how handy that Vance is a leading female impersonator.

Using the cover of Vanessa’s accident-induced amnesia, Vance feels he can bluff his way through his impersonation of Nessa at Friary Keep – an architectural mish-mash of medieval, Tudor, Elizabethan, gothic and Victorian styles owned by the multi-billionaire Everett Oversall. At Friary Keep, in the English countryside, his staff -- including his personal assistant, Nessa -- goes about its business. Also hanging out there is his harem, what the press calls his “Amazon Army,” kept at Friary Keep by “golden handcuffs.” Everyone seems to be living the good life, so what would be the motive for trying to kill Vanessa?

Although it’s the most unbelievable part of this frothy concoction, Vance's playing Vanessa also adds the most spice and comedy. Marian Babson’s books aren’t about character development or glorious writing or believability – they’re about fun. The cat in the title is Gloriana (which is also Vance’s stage name), a white Angora with sapphire eyes. Of course, the feline Gloriana knows all but doesn’t give away much to a stranger she knows isn’t her mistress. Only the Cat Knows is a quick read, a romp for readers who prefer escapism to realism.

Really cute cozy mystery. Loved it. She has changed her focus from the American B actresses to another character but I liked the change. A nice lite read. ( )
