Basic Reason for Beginning: Er... I have this fondness of swans... And fairytales. And, thus, swan maidens. So how can I possibly pass up a swan maiden fairytale?
Basic Reason for Finishing: It's not the most unpredictable story (but it's not the most predictable one either!), but it's definitely something I read for the characters. I fell for Jaume quickly after he was introduced and I think many a young person can relate to Doucette.
Texture: I wish I could give you something feathery, but it's more like heather in bloom.

Book Rereadability: Mmm. Tough question. It's not on any "must reread now" lists I have, but it's not on the 'never want to read this again' list either. It's very sweet and I'm glad I read it, but... I don't know.
Author Rereadability: Again, I really don't know. I liked Tomlinson's prose well enough, and her characters even more. I have a quibble with the world-building which I'll get to below the cut. But... This book comes paired with a nice preview chapter of Aurelie and I'm so nitpicky about my fey... It influences the decision. I'm certainly not adverse to picking up another book by her hand!
Recommendation: If you love fairytales (as the French retold them), you'll find this a treat. If you hate romance, you're better off looking for something else. ( )

Doucette, the youngest of three sisters, is unhappy that she is forbidden to take part in the world of magic and flight that her older sisters enjoy. As swan maidens, they can direct the course of their future, while Doucette is forced to learn the skills that will make her a competent housewife, guided to marry a man of her parents' choosing. When she finds her hidden wings, she wastes no time in making her decision to change her future. She follows her sisters to receive training in the art of magic, but she soon finds that not even this freedom can make her happy. Loosely following the fairy tale version, the characters in this story seem somewhat superficial, though the action is engaging. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0805082751, Hardcover)

In the quiet hour before dawn, anything can happen. A third daughter can dream of being a creature of flight and magic, of wearing a swan-skin like her sisters. But Doucette must run the castle household while her older sisters learn to weave spells. Her dream of flying is exactly that—until the day she discovers her own hidden birthright.

Sudden, soaring freedom—it is a wish come true. Yet it comes with a price. As Doucette struggles to find her own way in the world, she risks losing the one she loves most of all.

An age-old fairy tale told in a refreshingly original voice, Heather Tomlinson’s stunning debut is fantasy at its most eloquent and richly imagined.
