The Spellcoats by Diana Wynne Jones
Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve
Playing Beatie Bow by Ruth Park
The Blood Stone by Jamila Gavin
Just Henry by Michelle Magorian (who is one of my favourite YA ... You might want to try the 2008 YA novel Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve. It's a very different take on the Arthurian legend, told from the perspective of a young girl whose family is killed and whose village is destroyed by a bandit gang. It's also got a couple interesting transgender twists ... ... an interesting look at issues of racism in a fantasy setting.
My possibly Number One book of 2008 was Philip Reeve's Here Lies Arthur, which I see shows up in the touchstone listing to the right, but I don't find it actually mentioned in a post. It's a very interesting take on the Arthuria ... ... a Gay (ex) Boyfriend by Carrie Jones, but you ought to give it a look-see because it does seem to have a following.
Here Lies Arthur by Philip Reeve was one of my top YA choices for last year. It's a retelling of the Arthurian legend, and it includes a couple transgender twists. I ... ... oy.
CURRENTLY READING
The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti – really good so far
ON MY MUST READS LIST
Larklight by Philip Reeve – sci-fi
Tunnels by Roderick Gordon – sci-fi
Spiggot's Quest by Garry Douglas Kilworth - fantasy
Among the Hidden by Margaret Peterson Haddix ... ... reading The Dark is Rising so that makes sense! I'm quite fond of Arthur books myself - having said which, I just had Here Lies Arthur, which was well reviewed, out of the library for three loan periods and had to return it unread - just couldn't get into it. And I loved other stuff I've ... I think I might choose as NUMBER ONE Phillip Reeve's Here Lies Arthur, a revisionist (and realistic/naturalistic) presentation of the Arthurian Myth.
There's also Tiffany Trent's ongoing "Hallowmere" series, although I think the more recent volumes have started to slip a bit, and Trent ... ... as Gold by Bunce. So clever!
I also read The Boy in the Striped Pajamas in 08 and adored it. I'm going to be reading Here Lies Arthur and Chains very soon - and cannot WAIT to read Graceling! Between Golden Jaws and the whole "Hallowmere" series (which began in 2007): Tiffany Trent
Here Lies Arthur: Philip Reeve
The Magician: The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel, second in the "Nicholas Flamel" series (which began in 2007): Michael Scott
The Tree She ... ... level of the sentence.
81. Little Face - Sophie Hannah
I actually picked up an entirely different book yesterday (Here Lies Arthur, which I have out from the library), but put it down again after a few pages as I realised I completely wasn't in a fantasy-history sort of mood. Ended up ...
