Two more female writers, though I don't know if they've been translated: Christa Wolf or Marion ... I updated my list to replace The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif with The Yacoubian Building by Alaa al Aswany as my read for Egypt. This, unfortunately, doesn't reflect great positivity on my part for The Yacoubian Building, which I didn't really enjoy, but I definitely found it a less ... Possession by A.S. Byatt is the first that comes to mind. Oh, and The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif. ... lit this spring. Included on the syllabus are Latifa Zayyat's The Open Door, Mohammed Mrabet's The Lemon, and The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif.

So far, ok, but it's taking so long. I can image 18th century gents finding it hilarious, but it's hard to get yourself in that mindset sometimes! I'm reading The map of love at the moment which is amazing and captivating both for its portrayal of Egypt and its presentation of romance.
I'm going to Barcelona in the new year and want to re-read Homage to Catalonia before I go. The Map of Love by Ahdaf Soueif ... a baby after a character from a book!

I have read two excellent novels by Soueif--The Map of Love and In the Eye of the Sun. The Map of Love moves between a contemporary romance between an American journalist and an Egyptian-American conductor, and the ... One of my friends returned a book to me today that I'd lent her six years ago. It was one of my favorite books (The Map of Love, by Ahdaf Soueif), and I knew she'd like it. Yes, it took her a long time to get to it, but she really enjoyed it, and I'm happy I could give her that experience. ... Off hand I can recall only Yasmin Zahran, Alifa Rifaat, Laila Lalami - who runs the popular "Moorish Girl" blog, and Ahdaf Soueif.
