After 14-year-old Peak Marcello is arrested scaling a New York City skyscraper, his mother and stepfather negotiate a plea deal where Peak's long-absent father will take him out of the country until the publicity over his stunt dies down. However, his father, a mountaineer who leads expeditions up Mount Everest, has ulterior motives. In order to save his company, he wants Peak to be the youngest person to ever summit Everest. Smith uses rich and fascinating detail about sherpas, Tibet, Buddhism, climbing Everest, and the personalities of those who attempt the summit. The first-person narrative is not believable as the voice of a 14-year-old boy, but the rich detail and action-adventure keeps you turning the pages. ( )

Fascinating, in a “why would anyone ever want to do that?” kind of way. (I clearly don’t have that because-it’s-there gene.) A good story, well-written ( )

Book description
Peak is about a boy who is trying to not only find himself, but figure out what what's important in life. He ends up in trouble climbing a skyscraper and finds himself on Everest with his famous father. He then learns by conquering the mountain to conquer himself. He starts to notice the world around him instead of just him. This book would be a great book to use in any of my language arts classes. We would be able to look to any of the literary elements, and the elements of plot through the various characters and conflicts that come up through out the story.
