Gifted by Nikita Lalwani
Lalwani was born in India and grew up in Cardiff, Wales; the main character of her book, Rumi, is born in Cardiff to immigrants recently arrived from India. I don't know that Rumi's story is at all autobiographical, but Lalwani certainly draws on her own ... Interesting! A new(ish) prize -- how fun! I really enjoyed Gifted so will follow this one with some interest. ... biennial award for a first novel published in the UK. The inaugural prize in 2008, won by Nikita Lalwani for her novel, Gifted, was so well received by publishers, booksellers and the general reading public that the trustees were prompted to change the prize to an annual award.
"Worth £10 ... ... got The Indifferent Stars Above from the library. Starting that one tomorrow so I'm glad to hear it's a star.
And Gifted... a friend of mine received that as an ER and really liked it but I'd forgotten about it. Thanks for the reminder!
Looking forward to the release of Annie's Gho ... ... by Shadows. I have the only copy on LT.
Some nice surprises. These aren't perfect and they are not for everyone.

65th book: Gifted by Nikita Lalwani. A really interesting read about Rumika Vasi, a gifted Maths prodigy, who is continually pushed to achieve by her father, and her increasing attempts at rebellion. This book was short-listed for the Costa First Novel Award 2007 and rightly so. ... sure - as others have said, it should fit beautifully into the selection you've listed.
I've heard good things about Gifted as well (and put it on my own TBR list), but can only really give it half a nudge since I haven't yet read it myself. Mansfield Park, without a doubt, but I'd also like to put in a word for Gifted, a very accomplished debut that covers somewhat familiar ground in a compassionate and witty and sad way. I also gave it to a teenage girl to read, and she was very moved by it. So if you happen to know any teenage ... ... (oldest determined by date added to my LT catalog):

34 Gifted by Nikita Lalwani. Really liked this. Excellent debut. Felt bad for Rumi, and often wanted to give the other people in her life (esp mum and dad) a good smack. Found myself caring about her, and wanting her to succeed. Or more to the point, ... Philosophy made Simple by Robert Hellenga
Schooled by Anisha Lakhani

Bee Season by Myla Goldberg (spelling bees)
Ancient History by Garth Ennis ... they referred to it as an unbound mini manuscript I think. This one was closer to an actual book size though compared to Gifted. My copy of Gifted was also like mint910's. (Didn't know it was called a "galley" tho.) Several people had copies like that, although have not heard anyone mention galleys of any other ARC's. My first ever ER book was Gifted and it came in a larger 8x10 unbound galley. If I remember correctly, I asked others who had gotten it and I think most got ARC's but there were a few others that got the same thing I did. I think that's just what do they when they run out of copies in the book ... I've been requesting since the beginning as well.
I've gotten:
Gifted
Olive Kitteridge
Manic
The Translator: A Tribesman's Memoir of Darfur

Love Marriage (April)
Loose Girl (May)- haven't gotten yet

15. A Dangerous Age - Ellen Gilchrist (ARC)
16. War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy (This one took 2 months!)
17. Life and Times of Michael K - J.M ... I finished Gifted last night - not bad, and the characters felt quite real, but not really an enjoyable reading experience, either.
I, too, am starting Birth of Venus today... but I'm absolutely in the mood for a little bit of fluffy reading, so that'll be fine. :) ... inclusion of On Chesil Beach, Mister Pip, and The Reluctant Fundamentalist and very disappointed by the exclusion of Gifted and What Was Lost. Wouldn't it have been nice to have a first-timer on the short list? Oh well. I received two books today from an LT friend:
Gifted (passing along her early reviewers copy), and Stolen Lives.
My TBR has been mostly "virtual" for a while but now my stacks are starting to grow... ... all these tales of woe: enormous Catholic families, alcoholism, sexual abuse, grief, penis fixations, and so on and on.
2. Gifted – I was very moved by this first novel. It's a relatively simple coming-of-age tale like hundreds of others, but the voice is very strong and sure and full of ... ... it's a bit of a yawn to say "this is the best of the three I've read so far..."
What say you all?
