How I enjoyed this book as a student - and this particular edition - and its front cover of the dykemaster and his white horse against a blue background. ( )I read this about 37 years ago, but I still remember the wife's prayerr as the schimmel reiter starts out on his last ride in the flood, "Schutze ihm, du lieber Gott, nur du und ich, wir kennen ihm allein." "Guard hom, thou dear God, only you and I, we alone know/undestand him." A very powerful book and a clear picture of society on the northern German coast. Der Schimmelreiter is a great story even when you have to read it to get through exams A wonderful story, very stormy and sinister in places, evokes great moods. Education vs. superstition. I love the dialogues, the old German, has so much charm to it. Great story to read late at night during a thunderstorm! Absolutely eerie in parts. Reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe in parts.
