Jessica H.-A good book about loving someone and them hating the other person until their opinions swither ( she hates him and he her). Confusing format ( )When Julianna first saw Bryce, she was instantly in love. When Bryce first saw Julianna, he was instantly annoyed. Getting to see how each person views the same events from the different perspectives is both fun and eye opening. Follow these two characters from their first meeting back in second grade all the way to the present eighth grade young adults they've become. I found this book to be a perfect read for any adolescent middle school boy or girl who needs a fresh perspective on how everyone's perspectives can differ, even for the same event. I couldn't stop reading it after first opening it, so I highly recommend finding a little free time, and settling in to see what Flipped is all about. I loved the idea of the chapters alternating between the point of views of Bryce and Julianna in this book. A light read, with a perfect balance of humor and romance. I wish this had a sequel... I picked this book up for a topic-based book club wherein the topic was "young adult" literature. I really enjoyed Flipped, it was quite a surprise. While the core plot was somewhat predictable, boy moves into new neighborhood in the second grade, finds neighbor girl icky at first, then over the course of a few years, in eighth grade, much has changed and she is not so icky anymore. However, sprinkled in were some very tough facts of life, issues of poverty, substance over wealthy facades, what people can and do sacrifice for others, or a lifestyle. Also, a theme that runs throughout the novel is looking beneath the surface, of anything, human beings, nature, relationships - how we all make (erroneous) assumptions about people based on looks, but if you give a person time, find they are quite different than you thought. I think this would be wonderful reading for the targeted audience, 8th graders, but even a bit younger, and like me, quite a bit older (I am 41). It was a fast read, very sweet book and I even found myself tearing up a time or two. I recommend Flipped highly and just purely enjoyable. Flipped is the story of Juli and Bryce, told in alternating chapters. Juli is obsessed with Bryce from the moment they meet, in second grade. Of course, Bryce finds Juli annoying and avoids her at all costs. Finally, as they enter 8th grade, Bryce begins to notice Juli; however, at the same time, Juli realizes how shallow and cowardly Bryce is. The tables are turned and now Bryce has to chase Juli. Ha! Amazon.com (ISBN 0375825444, Paperback)Juli Baker devoutly believes in three things: the sanctity of trees (especially her beloved sycamore), the wholesomeness of the eggs she collects from her backyard flock of chickens, and that someday she will kiss Bryce Loski. Ever since she saw Bryce's baby blues back in second grade, Juli has been smitten. Unfortunately, Bryce has never felt the same. Frankly, he thinks Juli Baker is a little weird--after all, what kind of freak raises chickens and sits in trees for fun? Then, in eighth grade, everything changes. Bryce begins to see that Juli's unusual interests and pride in her family are, well, kind of cool. And Juli starts to think that maybe Bryce's brilliant blue eyes are as empty as the rest of Bryce seems to be. After all, what kind of jerk doesn't care about other people's feelings about chickens and trees? With Flipped, mystery author Wendelin Van Draanen has taken a break from her Sammy Keyes series, and the result is flipping fantastic. Bryce and Juli's rants and raves about each other ring so true that teen readers will quickly identify with at least one of these hilarious feuding egos, if not both. A perfect introduction to the adolescent war between the sexes. (Ages 12 to 14) --Jennifer Hubert(retrieved from Amazon Fri, 24 Apr 2009 07:58:05 -0400) The first test round has been closed.
