Well if you want to go back in time a little, I think Go Ask Alice and The Diary of Anne Frank are books that all teens should read. I also think The Outsiders and Rumble Fish might be dated but they were great books.

Of course the writing in The Diary of a Young Girl is pretentious and self-centered. Anne was a young teenage girl and like every teenage girl, naive and self absorbed a great deal of the time. I respectfully disagree with you in regards to The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. I find the writing pretentious and self centered and can't help but think that it is only because of the tragedy of her death and the fact she didn't survive the war that has made the book so popular. ... ...
Since Ann Frank was mentioned in Gordon Brown's eloquent D-Day speech at Normandy yesterday, I now am prompted to re-read The Diary of Ann Frank ... for young readers - but many fewer which can be read and appreciated as deeply at 13 as at 33 or 73, IMHO.
I would say Diary of a Young Girl is another - perhaps The Yearling too and I'm sure there are others. A few that come to mind:

I like his essays and short pieces better than his two fiction titles I've read (Fight Club and Choke).

Now it's never leaving my bookshelf. I have just started reading the Diary of Anne Frank, i read it once before with my primary school class, and ever since then i have wanted to read it again.
... and can be read by younger kids than many Holocaust books. I mean books like Night, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, and Diary of a Young Girl are great and we did read/learn about them, but at an age when those didn't make much sense Maus did. Number the Stars was another I remember ... I love the Latke!
My daughter is reading The Diary of Anne Frank in English and learning about World War II. She's finding it heavy going - not that it's above her head, just that it's really heavy stuff. But she enjoys graphic novels. Maybe I'll suggest Maus for her.

I also loved The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank. The Diary of a Young Girl ... hand accounts (though the author was a prisoner, I believe, she does not describe her personal experience) such as Night or The Diary of Anne Frank. Of course, there are still parts that are quite upsetting to read.
All in all I would recommend it.

I understand social point of view but I still thinks it's a big difference between the The diary of a young girl : the definitive edition and the original since there's parts of Anne's diary that you don't know if you haven't read the new edition. I've started to separate The diary of a young girl : the definitive edition cos there seems to both the definitive edition and the original edition since anything published before 2001 has to be the original edition.
