"Max's Dragon Shirt" by Rosemary Wells is about a funny little bunny who needs new pants because his are dirty. The main character, Max, is a silly boy bunny who is just like every other young boy and gets his pants dirty. The theme of this story could be to not lose a young one in the mall since Ruby lost Max. The author has written other books including: "Bunny Cakes,"Noisy Nora," and "Bunny Money." ( )

Max's old blue pants are getting quite worn out, but Max doesn't mind. In fact, he likes them that way. But his mother decides it's time for him to get new pants and puts his sister, Ruby, in charge of bring him to the store to buy them. Max would rather use the five dollars their mother gave them to buy a dragon shirt instead. In the hustle and bustle of the shopping center, Max and Ruby get separated and Max happens to find a perfect dragon shirt. By the time Ruby finds Max, he has managed to drip ice cream all over the shirt. Luckily, it was only five dollars. This is an enjoyable picture book for young children, one of several in the Max and Ruby series by Rosemary Wells. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and full of details that add to the story. I think students would love reading this book out loud, and giggle at Max's clever way of getting his dragon shirt after all. This book could also be used for discussion about not wondering away from your parents or the people you are with when in a crowded place. It could also be used to introduce a lesson on money, seeing as how the detail that they have just five dollars is pointed out several times. ( )
