Экранизация одноимённого романа популярного польского писателя-фантаста Станислава Лема о контакте человека с иной цивилизацией - Солярисом, мыслящим океаном. Это фильм-притча о том, что должно быть первичным для человека - мораль и нравственность или познание истины, не взирая на добро и зло (принцип современной науки). По мнению некоторых критиков, «экранизация сделана с истинной философской глубиной, сопоставимой с необъятным миром космоса».
