Biografia dell’uomo che considerò l’Italia “un’espressione geografica”.Klemens Wenzel principe di Metternich, nato a Coblenza nel 1773, fu destinato fin dall’adolescenza alla carriera diplomatica. A soli 28 anni divenne ministro plenipotenziario a Dresda e a Berlino dando brillanti prove della sua abilità negoziatrice. Chiamato successivamente da Napoleone come ambasciatore a Parigi, al centro delle vicende europee e a contatto con i piú smaliziati politici dell’epoca come Talleyrand e Fouché, egli maturò la vocazione alle sottigliezze del gioco diplomatico. Il suo trionfo fu il Congresso di Vienna, dove ebbe modo di far prevalere il suo “genio della restaurazione”. Grande soffocatore dei moti liberali in tutta Europa e in Italia in particolare, nel 1848 fu costretto a fuggire a Vienna, per tornarvi piú tardi, quando ormai le sue idee appartenevano al passato.
