It is set against the backdrop of professonal football and kids caught up in the foster care system. One of these kids, Cory, has been taken in by his foster mom Megan ever since his real mother died. She wants to adopt him but he is isistent he has a dad--and that dad happens to be the star quarterback of the San Francisco 49's. Megan doesn't believe that this could be true, but the efforts of another football player gives Cory a chance to deliver a message to his "real dad". What follows is the story of how this quarterback learns that what happens "between Sundays" is just as important as what happens on the field. The story was good enough, the audio version I listened to was terrible. I'm sorry, but the narrator tried to hard to make different voices for the characters, but her characterizations were distracting at best. If you like emotionally laden stories give this one a read--but stay away from the audio version. The story line is moving and keeps you involved right from the beginning. Derrick is the "man" and he give thoughout the story... yet there are lots of twists and thought provoking messages. Something that you'll enjoy for a long tome to come. I haven't been a football fan for awhile, but I enjoyed this story set in San Franisco. Very moving and inspiring. Another strong story line from Karen Kingsbury. In this stand alone novel she brings the problems with the foster care system to light. This inspirational story will touch your heart and your life. Kingsbury has a way of encouraging us to appreciate our faith without being too preachy. 0.062 seconds to build listing

The narration in this novel felt a bit stilted at times, but she gave a true voice to her characters through dialogue. The most well developed character was Aaron's teammate Derrick, though one does also see growth in Megan and Aaron. Kingsbury incorporates the environment of San Francisco very well into her novel and does a good job of bringing the football games to life. She uses a great deal of detail in these scenes and makes the reader feel as though he or she is in the middle of the game.
The book also takes the reader on a bit of an adventure ride. In many places the plot could have gone any number of directions and it's any reader's guess as to what direction Kingsbury would take. This is a great book for those who like an element of plot twist and mystery in their romance stories. It's a good, clean read that leaves the reader feeling hopeful for the future of all characters involved.
