kathleen.morrow: Cheaper by the Dozen is non-fiction, but has a similar sense of humor to it. Both are well-written and hilarious.

I hadn't read this book in years. It was as enjoyable as I remember it being. I hope you'll pick it up. ( )

The Herdmans and the Christmas pageant in the same sentence. Who'd have ever thought?

This is my favorite Christmas book. The Herdmans are the meanest kids around but when they get mixed up in the church's Christmas pageant, their hearts are changed. It is funny and for everyone. ( )

When the rambunctious, irreverent Herdman children take part in the local church Christmas pageant, neighbors predict a holiday disaster. What they didn't predict was finding new meaning in the old, old story of The Nativity.

Read multiple times. Just finished reading with my kids.
I always forget how much I love this. I always get chills at the end. Books that teach patience and acceptance and grace are always welcome! ( )

First words
The Herdmans were absolutely the worst kids in the history of the world.
Everyone had been waiting all this time for the Herdmans to do something absolutely unexpected. And sure enough, that was what happened.
I'm going to make this the very best Christmas pageant anybody ever saw, and I'm going to do it with Herdmans, too. After all, they raised their hands and nobody else did. And that's that.

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0064402754, Paperback)

The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant.

None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale -- the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating -- has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year's pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.
