I'm asking because last Summer I read The Third Chimpanzee and Jared Diamond seems to think visiting ETs won't be terribly friendly, especially if they are anything like us. Guns, Germs, and Steel was one of my favorite books last year. I recently bought Collapse and The Third Chimpansee but I can't fit them into a category for 999. I still hope to read them next year.

@ message 8: gordon361, that sounds pretty interesting. Maybe that will be my next nonfiction. In The Third Chimpanzee Jared Diamond has a listing of genocides. It's pretty depressing reading really ... but if you really wanted to get into trouble, you could sort them by religious belief. So, let's see, it looks to me like, ahem, Atheists come out on top (adding Stalin's numbers to the Kh ... ... times! Looks like the USSR killed off, you ready for this... 60 million of it's own people between 1917 and 1959.
*The Third Chimpanzee
Yes, I just read it in another of Diamond's books called The Third Chimpanzee and the 'shrinkage' was due to poor nutrition. They were eating too much starch, not enough protein, not enough vitamins and minerals, etc. If you're interested in human evolution, Jared Diamond wrote an excellent book, The Third Chimpanzee.
I quickly browsed through the above posts. I am surprised that no one recommended Freakonomics by Steven Levitt & Stephen Dubner, The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell, or Blin ... A People's History of the United States
