Adair is easily the one author I know of that the rest of the world has not discovered he has written several deeply complex and literate novels. Don't judge the book by the sloppy movie with Jason Priestly and John Hurt. ( )

Ungewollt komisch wirkt die Qual des Protagonisten "in jenen Momenten, in denen ich darum rang, meiner eigenen Sprache Gestalt zu geben". Fast scheint es so, als ringe nicht nur der Erzähler, sondern auch der Autor um Worte. Nur zuweilen finden sich gelungene Passagen, wenn etwa London beschrieben wird, dort wo "die Straße an Fahrt gewinnt, wie ein Strom, der sich alsbald reißend in das Meer der tiefer liegenden Metropole ergießt." Ansonsten droht der Leser in Metaphern zu ertrinken. Schiefe Bilder wie das vom "Schneeball, von dem sozusagen alles Fett weggeschnitten worden war", verderben den sprachlichen Genuß der Lektüre.
