Well, it sort of sounds like The Enduring Flame series by Mercedes Lackey which starts with The Phoenix Unchained and is followed by The Phoenix Endangered but one friend has the High (War) magic and the other friend has the wild magic (the three books, Sun, Moon, Star.)
