Detailed pencil drawings have won this book a Caldecott honor. Classroom connections: This story could be used as an example of Native American tales and creation myths. This story is a legend because it has been told and retold over the years. This is a good example of characterization because during the journy the mouse must change. He is an example of a dynamic character. As the story progresses he becomes more self-sacrificing and this allows him to reach the far-off land.
