The book tends to drift a bit and lose cohesion in the middle, but overall the story is pretty good - detailing the first week in the "life" of an average girl turned vampire against her will. I believe this is this author's debut effort, so I'm interested in reading more of her work to see where she goes from here. Hands down the greatest book I've ever read! It is an adult book but its biting vampiric sarcasm rocks. - Megan B. Vampire books aren't my favorite--but this one was funny. I loved the attitude of the main character. 0.061 seconds to build listing no reviews | add a review

Sure, she interrupts him as he's about to throw himself off a bridge - but as far as rescuers go, Thierry de Bennicoeur will have to do. Only problem is their age difference. Read a bit, got sidetracked, only now got back to it, alternating it and Atlas Shrugged depending on what mood I was in on any given night. Worked pretty well, but thus took a long time to read.
I enjoyed it, but wouldn't count it among my favorites. I'd certainly be willing to try other books by Rowen, but this is still simply not my genre.
To begin, it was immediately clear that this was not my usual strong, vampire-hunting, kick-ass lead character--Sarah Dearly spoke of shoes, of shopping, and, no matter how tense the potentially life-threatening situation, of how hot every single male around her was. Hoo-boy. The main character is my nemesis. This bodes well. I remember quoting her to YMP and asking "Would Anita ever say that?" "No way." Still, it was sort of hard not to watch with some strange fascination.
As the book went along, it got a lot better. The character was still the same, but perhaps there was less time for some of the shallowness as the plot really began to develop. I enjoyed just how different it was from any other vampire novel I'd ever read. I'm also not used to reading books set in the cold of Canada and with tunnels like Toronto. There were some witty things like the vamp bar behind the tanning salon. A few good twists that were right up my alley. I liked the scenes at the wedding giving Sarah some perspective.
Overall, I couldn't really connect to a lot of the characters, and I think some of the things they said or did felt forced or out of character. The ending was a nice little box with a bow, but again seemed almost too easy given all the madcap buildup. It certainly had redeeming points, and I had gone into it expecting a light read, so I was not disappointed.
Would I recommend it? Yes, to someone who likes the genre or wants a light read. Reread value is fairly low for me, but I wouldn't be against trying a second book from the author. (
