Put Me in the Zoo is about a dog who wants to be in the zoo. The story rhymes which is typical of Dr. Seuss books. The dog thinks that if he has spots he can get into the zoo. He keeps putting spots of different colors on himself. In the end, he goes to the circus instead of the zoo.
The official website is www.seussville.com. All of Dr. Seuss’s books are listed along with a playground where students click to find games around the theme of some of the books. There is also a link to Seussville Storymaker where students can write their own story and also add scenery.

This is a fun book about a boy and a girl that learn about an extra ordinary dog with many talents. The story decries the zoo's inhabitants. The story shows this dogs color changing skills and in the end he is put in the circus instead.

This goes over colors and shapes. A tale about an animal wanting to be in the zoo, and can do many things with his spots. ( )

Dr. Seuss is easy to read for those who are beginning to read and writer.

Genre: fantasy
Critique of Genre: This is a catchy example of fantasy where we see this different creature wanting to be put in the zoo and showing a couple children why he thinks he should be put there by showing them all the tricks he can do with his spots.
Characterization: All of the characters are relatively flat because we do not learn any previous knowledge about them and we don't learn much more throughout the story. The animal with spots wants desperately to be put in the zoo and shows the tricks it can do with its spots only to be told, in the end, that the circus would be better suited for them.
Media: mixed media (colored pencil; pen and ink) ( )

My father loved this book, and so he read it often to me. Now I read it often to my nieces. I love it all the more for the connection to my personal history.

This is a fun story (the illustrations, showing the children's reactions, are hysterical) about a critter who wants to live in the zoo, and to prove that he should he shows off all the tricks he and his spots can do. Eventually he goes to the circus, everybody is happy.

I will note that the zoo depicted is a very archaic, every animal in a small, unfriendly cage type of zoo; I do not think it is sensible that he'd really like to "live this way". But when it comes up as an issue, we'll talk about it. The focus of the book is really about the cool (rhyming) tricks that can be done with spots.

I will also note that the board book version of this is seriously abridged and is, unfortunately, not very well constructed. Please just get the full edition. ( )

An animal is not allowed to join the zoo. When he shows some kids all the colors he can change to, they direct him toward the circus. ( )

This simple rhyming book about a creature who can do clever tricks with his spots was a beloved favorite when I was a child, and now my 3 1/2 year-old grandson loves it as well. He giggles throughout and then demands "AGAIN!" The request factor is one of my litmus tests. ( )

This is a cute book about a creature (not sure what exactly he is) who can do some amazing things. He wants to go live in the zoo, but they don't want him. Two children help him find a home that suits him much better. I read this many times with my son when he was little. ( )

This is a well loved favorite of my brother and I when we were kids. The story is clever and the illustrations are funny... and there's a lesson to be learned to boot!

A spotted creature despairs because the zoo has rejected him. He details for a passing girl and boy just what he can do and why the zoo should take him, including changing the color and size of his spots, putting spots on anything in the environment, and playing with his spots. Their response is that he belongs in the circus, not the zoo. ( )
