Lord Ramage, de marine's jongste en meest junior kapitein, krijgt orders om zeil te zetten naar Diamond Rock nabij het Westindische eiland Martinique. Het is een routine klus -het blokkeren van de fransen in Port Royal- , maar de Juno, het schip onder zijn bevel is geen routine schip. De bemanning is lui en op het randje van muiterij door hun dronken ex-kapitein. De Juno is verre van gereed als ze het bij aankomst op moet nemen tegen de trots van de franse vloot.
Een plotselinge en gewaagde aanval van enkele franse vrijbuiters uit West-Indië vraagt dan het beste van de nieuwe kapitein en zijn ongeoefende bemanning om te vechten met alles wat er in hun vermogen ligt.
