Very good. Another winner about Kinsey's ex-husband shot over an old murder

I took a long hiatus before reading this book which is probably good. There were a lot of little things that were starting to bug me about this series. They didn't seem to bug me as much in this one. I enjoyed it. Although somewhat predictable and there was one spot I totally didn't buy. Still a old summer read. You know what you are getting when you pick up a Grafton. ( )

I just love the Kinsey Millhone series. In this installment, more layers of Kinsey’s life are peeled away as readers are introduced to her first husband…well, sort of. A random person contacts Kinsey after he finds some of her belongings in an abandoned storage unit. This discovery leads her to searching for her ex to make amends for her behavior when their relationship ended. When she finds him, he’s in quite a bit of trouble. Kinsey works really hard to help him. Typical of a Grafton novel, the story twists and turns with lots of characters. I liked this one very much and look forward to continuing with the alphabet. ( )

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book in this series but I found Kinsey in fine form. She slowly starts investigating and as the clues start adding up, she picks up the pace and her persistence in figuring out who and how people are connected to her ex-husband. Kinsey is sarcastic, tough, skeptical and humorous and breaks the rules as needed. I enjoyed how she worked everything out. ( )

I love Kinsey Millhone. But she's not everyone's cup of tea. I started reading the Alphabet series a few years ago - I think at the time it was up to O is for Outlaw. The idea of a mystery series each title beginning with a new letter amused me. I don't know why. I don't think it's particularly original. At least - I've seen a few others since. At the time though it was new to me and it just struck me as perfect. I flew through the series. Kinsey is riveting. She's brash and harsh and charming. She's fierce and flawed. She gets scared. She holds her own. She pushes herself to run often and tackles cases without judgement and with an open mind. Rosie and Henry are brilliant and I love the little family she builds around her.

But Kinsey Millhone isn't Jack Reacher - her speed is more Tracy Crosswhite. [book:My Sister's Grave|22341263] Her cases aren't full of action and high speed chases - they're slowly nitpicking away until something clicks into place. She writes down all her thoughts and places her facts and ideas on 3x5 index cards - which she often shuffles and rearranges to help her solve her case. And I love it. Kinsey Millhone is great - but she's not for everyone.

For some reason I've seen reviewers compare this to Stephanie Plum - I don't know why - this is absolutely NOTHING like that. Stephanie Plum is a very different character and an extremely different type of book. That's more fluff. Kinsey Millhone is more procedural mysteries. And this series isn't current - it was first published in the 80's - there's not really technology. Messages were relayed by calling the landlines. Paper files were still the main form of storage. Not everyone will enjoy reading this. But if you like your mysteries to be more like procedurals with a determined and fierce character - Kinsey Millhone is for you.

This one made me sad. The mystery was good and the characters were fascinating but I would've liked Mickey to get better, it seemed like he got screwed over and it would've been good for Kinsey to get a chance to make amends. Actual ones with words, rather than just solving the murder he was thought guilty of. I liked how many hiding places he had for shit.

5 stars. ( )

Book description
O is for once upon a time. . .
Let’s talk about Kinsey’s past. We know of the aunt who raised her, the second husband who left her, and her long-lost family up the California coast. But what about Kinsey’s husband number one? He was always a blip on the radar―until now.

O is for old secrets…
Kinsey receives a call from a random guy who scavenges defaulted storage units at auction. Last week, he bought a stack of boxes―and Kinsey’s name turned up inthem. For thirty bucks, Kinsey buys the lot and finds, among piles of childhood memorabilia, an undelivered letter from a long, long time ago.

O is for outlaw.
The old letter forces Kinsey to recall and reexamine her first failed marriage. It also sheds new light on a murder case gone cold―one that puts her life in the gravest peril. And from which there is no turning back. . .
