The Tears of All Oceans are missing. Six magnificent rose-colored pearls, which inspire passion and greed in all who see them, have been stolen and passed from hand to hand, leaving a cryptic trail of death and deception in their wake. And now Ublaz Mad Eyes, the evil emperor of a tropical isle, is determined to let no one stand in the way of his desperate attempt to claim the pearls as his own. At Redwall Abbey, a young hedgehog maid, Tansy, is equally determined to find the pearls first, with the help of her friends. And she must succeed, for the life of the one she holds dear is in great danger...

I likely read other 'Redwall' books more times, but this one was always a favorite. There's a lot of darkness and violence in these books about the lovable inhabitants of Redwall Abbey, but this one takes grief to another level. The story begins with a Pirate King ordering the death of an entire Otter Holt in order to claim there sole treasure of six, large, perfect pearls. A lone survivor is set on a course of revenge. The pealrs themselves inspire further death and treachery as they are stolen again and lost.

Meanwhile, at the Abbey, the skeletal remains of a corsair are discovered in Mossflower woods. When a corsair crew follows the trail of the pearls to the Abbey gates it becomes clear that the pearls had come to Redwall Abbey and must be found to prevent further bloodshed. There is abduction and a very high level of danger and tension that carries on for the whole book. There's also a lot of singing and baking and solving of riddles.

Jacques was so gifted at balancing tension. The pace of the book never slacks and there's always the chance a sunny footrace is going to end in death. Are aspects of the book silly or overwrought? Sure. The series is special regardless.

I first read the Redwall books years ago and I still enjoy them when I recently re-read them. I love the world building and the creativity with which these animals were anthropomorphized. The level of description is really well done and very detailed. So adventurous and so very entertaining. ( )

This is probably the book where Redwall started to go downhill for me, or perhaps I began to outgrow Redwall. There is only so much that can be read about the food of Redwall, mysterious riddles, and the evils of the Mustelidae. ( )

Epigraph
O curse the name Mad Eyes,
Say woe to the day
When he tried to steal
Tears of all Oceans away.
All corsairs and searats
Whose messmates lie dead,
Saw blood and hot flame
Turn the seas flowing red.
Though northcoast lies far
And the ocean is wide,
Run from the green arrows
Of vengeance, and hide.
For the price of six tears
Through the dreams of us all,
Walks the fear of a Warrior
From the place called Redwall.
Now the life of our Brethren
Who followed the sea,
Will ne'er be the same
For rovers such as we.
'Twas the greed of a tyrant
That brought us to shame,
Six tears for a crown---
Curse the Emperor's name!
