Short story, Miles is recuperating at home, and called to be the Voice investigating the murder of a suspected 'mutie' baby.

It's fairly predicatble, but well writen and does touch upon some of Miles' insecurities. ( )

One of my favorite Miles Vorkosigan stories. Miles is called upon to administer justice in a mountain province in his father's domain. The situation involves mutations and is fraught with difficulties for Miles. Of all the Vorkosigan stories, this one, for me, shows the most about how Barrayar actually works as a society. ( )

This wonderful Hugo and Nebula winning novella is available free from www.baen.com/library . It is an early Miles story, set just after his graduation from the academy. The crippled Miles, disfigured from birth by a poison attack on his mother, is dispatched to investigate a case in the rural hinterlands, an area where newborns with health problems are frequenty victims of infanticide. I highly recommmend this tragic story about prejudice, justice and obligation; by the end it will bring a tear to your eye. ( )
