I love Billy Connolly, and this takes us from his childhood, life as a welder, music/comedy/film career and two marriages. Lots of comic exerpts. Maybe not great writing, but good enough for an entertaining read. ( )

interesting book, funny and touching, warts and all with dark revelations. Written by his wife the comedian. ( )

Absolutely brilliant book. Laughed my way through the book, even the sad moments had a funny twist. Would give this book as a present as I think most people would find it funny. ( )

Insightful biography of a well-loved comedian who overcame huge challenges. Stephenson's affection and sympathy for her husband as a subject are warming. The book would be a more rewarding read were the writing style more fluid but this is a price worth paying for a perspective that no other biographer is likely to discover. ( )

Epigraph
'He must have chaos within him, who would give birth to a dancing star' Nietzsche
Dedication
To the Connolly and McLean families,
in the spirit of healing through understanding;
and to all families who are divided by religious differences,
or who struggle with poverty, abuse or addiction.
First words
Introduction: Much has been written about the chimerical joker to the world as 'Billy Connolly'. That creature, however, is a fictional one, a Bill-o'-the-wisp that dances from tabloid to tome with relentless innacuracy.
Chapter 1 ('Jesus is dead, and it's your fault!'): Billy Connolly, King of Comedy, Master of Mirth, Chancellor of Chortling, as his children have been instructed to address him, is quivering in the wings of the spectacularly cavernous Hammersmith Apollo theatre. 'Pamela, what the hell am I going to say to these people?'
