I also wrapped up After the Quake by Haruki Murakami. It's a collection of stories about people dealing (more psychological) with the after-effects, of a major earthquake. It's a good ... After the Quake, Adam Bede was out running After Dark, All Around Town trying to remember when life had been full of All Things Bright and Beautiful. #10 and #13, thank for the comments on Murakami...Tim has After the Quake and afka on the Shore so I will give one of them a go. I don't do magical realism though!! (Perhaps I should open my mind a crack).

8. Kafka on the Shore Gave up on the audio version of after the quake by Haruki Murakami - just not my taste. That bad part is that this was highly recommended by a very good friend. I hate when that happens! She and I usually have very similar taste, but we all have our quirks. ... back when it was released as a serial and you had to wait a week for the next installment. Good stuff.

#138 How do u like After the Quake? I read it recently and found it more interesting than his other short story collection Blind Woman, Sleeping Willow. Working my way through The 19th Wife - only 300 pages to go! Also listening to after the quake on audio for my commute book. ... Hopefully, mine will be showing up soon.

Creepers by David Morrell I read a short story the other day, The Garden Party, to jumpstart my 1001 reading again. Finished after the quake today, and I just started Thursbitch, though that one is quite a slow read (despite only being 150 pages or so). ... ll-written.
Oh, and I started Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World (not on the list, I know, but I also have After the Quake out from the library, to be read if I like the latter.) Seems okay so far, but then, I'm only a chapter or so in. ... to read, but at times, the dialogues all sound a bit too contrived, and the storytelling a bit telenovela-like.

... probably suggest Sputnik Sweetheart which I enjoyed but is pretty much Murakami-by-numbers. I wasn't bowled over by after the quake either if I am honest.
Although, it must be said that a less-than-wonderful Murakami novel is usually miles better than other writers at their best. ... the Shore which I liked a lot (guess that one should have tipped me off). I've also recently read Dance Dance Dance and After the Quake, Stories.

I'm reading After the quake and while the first story-UFO in Kushiro threw me off, as it's seemed shorter than a short story should be, and a snippet, Banana Yoshimoto style but ... ... - (being a sequel to Wild Sheep Chase) - the best written and most engaging.
Opinicus: I would recommend finishing the After the Quake stories. Though not all brilliant, there are gems. I particularly like the one about the fire on the beach, although I cannot for the life of me think of ... ... Murakami through Norwegian Wood which remains my favourite till today. I liked Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman and after the quake but didn't care much for The Elephant Vanishes. I liked Kafka on the Shore but I thought the second-half of the book dragged on far far too longer than ... I'm 2/3 or so the way through Murakami's short sotries, After the Quake. Not as good as The Elephant Vanishes.
on Murakami, I enjoyed immensely The Elephant Vanishes but I'm finding After the Quake less exciting.
The freshest, most imaginitive, most original short stories I've read in years though were Victor Pelevin's The Blue Lantern.
I've just started Murakami's After the Quake. I need a Murakami fix after a few months away and I was in the mood for some short stories too.
