Oh, yeah. I think I have a first edition of Silmarillion. I'm not sure if it's first ed or not, but it's in great condition.

Comparatively speaking, The Silmarillion is the whole Christian bible, The Lord of the Rings is the New(ish) Testament, and The Hobbit is the Psalms through the Prophets. Really, if you consider the firstborn/chosen people of Ilúvatar, the Elves, and how their struggles bring about a new ...

I personally enjoy the OT more than the NT. But then again, I enjoyed The Silmarillion, so what do I know. The Old Testament puts the New Testament in context, but it's sort of like reading the Silmarillion before reading LOTR. You may never get to the LOTR doing it that way. I've never been able to read the entire thing straight through, although I read almost every day. Also, I always read a ...

I'm fascinated. I don't think I have yet catalogued a single one of the books on any of these lists (except Silmarillion), though I do have the HPs and Tolkien and have read some of the others. Apart from my cataloguing is chaotic (so that's news?!), what does it say?

The Silmarilion! I've started it twice and skimmed it, but never cover to cover. My ADHD just can't handle it!

I know that Tolkien has already been comprehensively mentioned (duh!), but i have to correct one apparent omission: The Silmarillion. Also Tanith Lee - i propose the Flat Earth series, particularly Night's Master

I borrowed The Hobbit audio book from our local library but The Silmarillion is my own. I have The LoTR BBC dramatized version on CD but don't like it as well as the Inglis version. Someday I'm hoping to have all of them as audio books! 8^)

... everything in LOTR happens in the Third Age, but there are two Ages before that and they weren't dull, I can tell you (see The Silmarillion). A patron came in today asking for "the book with the boat on the cover, after the Lord of the Rings." We finally found the Silmarillion. :)

I owned The Silmarillion for years, but never could read it, so I think I gave it away. I've read Daniel Martin several times, though, also The Thornbirds, The Honorable Schoolboy and (gag me now) Oliver's Story.
