... recommendation for Humphrey Carter's The Inklings. It has as a parallel, or prequel, Carter's biography of The Professor, Tolkien. These two give a good insight into both men, and their circle of mutual or overlapping friends.

I dug out my Tolkien Reader and flipped through the poems in TAoTB, which include a few that appear in the text of The Lord of the Rings, such as Sam's poem about the trolls. So it's not really part of the LotR series, but a collection of things similar to The Tolkien reader. Well, I'll be the first to say J.R.R. Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. These are the storied that got me into reading in the first place. I know they are very well known and many have read them, but for me it is the trilogy that I am constantly holding others up too and non seem to ... I agree with you wholeheartedly about J.R.R. Tolkien. I can't get through any of his other works/compendiums. The Silmarillion was fascinating, but not in a "Wow! I'm really glad I read this!" sort of way. To be honest, I can't recall ever finishing it. Anything put together by his son, Christop ... ... never managed to finish À la recherche du temps perdu by Proust either. It's a little bit like the To the lighthouse/Tolkien -syndrome, it's sooo slooow and nothing ever happens. For solid discussions of all of Tolkien you should definitely visit the Reading Room at The One Ring.net, http://www.theonering.net (click "discussions" on the menu on the left side, then go to "Reading Room").

The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper
Piers Anthony
Julian May
Stephen Donaldson - The Illearth War etc.
J.R.R. Tolkien
Terry Brooks - The Sword of Shannara etc.
That is a few off the top of my head we read and enjoyed as early teenagers (and what was in the library). ... They are all included in a book called A Tolkien Miscellany published by the Sci-Fi Book Club is basically the same as A Tolkien Reader but with several other works included like Tom Bombadil, and, Leaf by Niggle, and On Fairy Stories. All of which excellent by the way/.
