A beautiful, grief-stricken woman has vanished without a trace. So has the detective hired to find her. And a lot of money...

Enter tough-nosed private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro. Rooted in the streets of blue-collar Dorchester, they've seen it all ?? and survived. There are some stellar scenes in this book. But they’re holding up a very silly plot. ( )

DL hit his stride w Sacred. Burned through this book. Kenzie's character grows and dominates the scene while others are introduced and given enough life to add to the scenes. Paced well with thoughtful passages that didn't drag the story down. Loved the ending on the coast of Maine. Thought the tying to the chairs was a bit much and Gennaro digging herself out of the hole? And again with the ultimate evil villains. So far no ambiguity in DLs bad guys. Still, detective books don't usually rate this high. After I finished the last page I held it up and patted it, thinking "Now this was a good read". Almost a 5. ( )

I enjoyed the private eyes involved in this investigation and the fact that nothing was quite what it seemed. As with al of Lehane's books, it was enthralling but not uplifting. I have to take a break between his novels. ( )

Another winner by Dennis Lehane from the Kenzie/Gennaro series. As I get to know them better, I like the books more, so I plan to continue reading more.

This one started out in one direction and veered off into unexpected territory a few times. The only common thread was the weirdness of some of the people. Oh, and Angie's ability to come through and save the day, surprising all who don't know her.

It was pretty brutal at times, but the ending was very satisfying and just. ( )

Do not give dogs what is sacred;
do not throw your pearls to pigs.
If you do, they may trample them underfoot,
and then turn and tear you to pieces.

Book description
From School Library Journal
Dying billionaire Trevor Stone has his thugs kidnap sleuths Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro and bring them to his mansion so he can hire them to find his missing daughter, Desiree. She is supposedly grief-stricken over the death of her mother and the impending death of her father but it becomes clear that she may not be the sweet and beautiful daughter her father describes. Patrick's mentor, Jay Becker, was the first investigator on the case but he has also disappeared. Patrick and Angie follow the trail to Florida after a brief encounter with a group of religious swindlers who may be involved with the disappearances. Every person they meet adds more confusion and conflicting information to the puzzling case. The intricate mystery of the changing identity of Desiree, dangerous car chases, bloody shoot-outs, and the humorous dialogue between Patrick and Angie, all with subtle romantic overtones, will keep you turning pages.
