66) When We Were Romans by Matthew Kneale Such a touching and moving story. Told from the perspective of nine-year-old Lawrence, we experience a fantastic, yet terriying adventure as Lawrence, his little sister and their mother travel to Roma, Italy in order to get away from their father. A ...

Book # 46 - Last night I finished When We Were Romans by Matthew Kneale. I'm glad that I read it and really felt some sympathy for the young boy dealing with the problems arising from his "Mum's" tenuous connection to the reality of their family life; reality, period. He tried to hold ...

I've been reading When We Were Romans. Well written, interesting young male protagonist. Tugs at my heart but not in a schmaltzy way at all. A few pages to go, then I will post to my 75/2009 Challenge thread. Link added below: http://www.librarything.com/topic/55208 WH

When We were Romans by Mathew Kneale I read this work on the basis of (I believe) the recommendation of someone in this group, who praised it highly. Although I found it to be enjoyable overall, I became tired of reading one of a couple of repetitive themes: "my mum's mood" (Granted, I ...

I'm still reading The Brothers Karamazov and just last night finished The Measure of a Man and When We Were Romans. I've always been impressed by Sidney Poitier as an actor ever since 'To Sir With Love'. But that's the character, and I'm now every bit as much impressed by the man himself. ...

... in the magazine publishing industry. Today I am fighting a sore throat (Uugh!) so I am taking it easy and reading When we were Romans. I am 80 pages in and enjoying the view of Rome, Roman history and people observations through the eyes of a 9 year old.

29. When We Were Romans by Matthew Kneale - I enjoyed this, in the way that I would enjoy talking to a precocious child. You have to keep in mind that the narrator is a nine-year old boy and sees the world from that vantage point. The book is written in as stream of consciousness (there were ...

When we were Romans arrived in SF today. Just the right size.

On the other hand, I loved When We Were Romans, so you might continue to wish it was longer instead!

Songbirdz, With When We Were Romans, longer is definately NOT better! It went on a little longer than it should have (in my opinion), but I did like the ending.

got an email about The Gone-Away World as well Also received recently When we were Romans, The Shiniest Jewel, Schooled and today got a second copy of Savvy and my copy of The Organ Grinder arrived.

Mailman fairy brought me When We Were Romans today, yay =) Thought it'd be a little thicker (the longer the better, according to the husband,) but hey, I'm not complaining!

I got The View from Garden City today and When We Were Romans. Since I have all my ARCs mailed to work and I haven't been in to get mail in two weeks I don't know exactly when they arrived.

I just posted my review of When We Were Romans on Worducopia but I can't find the card/letter that came with it, if there was one. Can anyone tell me if the publisher requested feedback?

When We Were Romans today in NJ.

... Feather Man. The second half of the book was better than the first, but what an eerie ending! I'm about to start When We Were Romans.

92: You missed me too! My review of When We Were Romans went up this afternoon--not as flattering as thekoolaidmom's though! http://lifeinbooks.wordpress.com/2008/08/12/when-we-were-romans-by-matthew-kneale/

I finished When We Were Romans yesterday, and couldn't decide between Zoe's Tale... DoB's glowing about it and she was right about Gargoyle... or Confessions of a Contractor. Well, sex and fun won out. I started Contractor last night. :-D

I think there are pretty much only three of us here. I just posted my review of When We Were Romans In the Shadow of Mt. TBR

I just posted my review of When We Were Romans. I really liked the book, thought I'm not sure I'd make the leap of comparing it to To Kill a Mockingbird. I've not read Curious Incident of the Dog, so I don't know how it compares there. But I really did enjoy Romans. Anyway, my ...

ohhhh...got When We Were Romans today. and a nice hardcover, not a paperback ARC.

I'm almost halfway through When We Were Romans, and I'm finding it compelling. It says a lot for Kneale's writing talents to write in a 9-year-old's voice as he describes the world around him and Kneale never slips out of the child's mind. What's got me hooked is the interim stories of the S ...

I just finished When We Were Romans. It's like that dog -in-the-night book that I'm completely blanking on the proper name.

It's interesting, I'm halfway through When We Were Romans, narrated by a nine-year-old boy, and just caught myself wondering how we know he's specifically nine. The narrative voice fits a precocious kid of that age, but unless I missed it, no reference to his age (or school-grade, etc.) is ...

I got When We Were Romans today. I didn't expect to get it - since I live in NJ, usually I'm one of the first to get books, so I give up on them after a few days of others reporting, and I'd given up on this, too. Makes me wonder if any of the others that I'm missing will turn up too.

When We Were Romans found its way to Oregon today, via UPS. I feel bad for the author--I requested it on 7/9, which should have been plenty of time for the publisher to get them out before the release date of 7/22 but no dice. It's got zero reviews on Amazon right now.

I got The Shiniest Jewel yesterday and When we Were Romans and The Necklace today. I also got Hurry Down Sunshine from LT earlier this week.

I received When We Were Romans yesterday in OK. :)

That's hilarious! I'm still working on step one. Not fully convinced I am powerless... yet. I got When We Were Romans in by UPS today. There's only a couple more ARCs left that I'm expecting. (Requested more, but given up on).

Two more ARCs today came, after We Were Romans. I got American Savior from a cold request and Midwife of the Blue Ridge as part of a book tour.

I got When We Were Romans today too. UPS totally bent it all up, but I guess I can't complain since it was free. I don't know when I'll get to it, since it was released last month. Perhaps in September or October?
