found you and starred you! Teri, I just gave a thumbs up on your excellent review of The Bone People. I was #15 by the way! Kudos to you for a job well done!

And now tiffin has TWO hot reviews: Wolf Hall and Giving up the Ghost, a veritable Mantel-fest. teelgee's review of The Bone People tops the list!

Great review. I tried to read The Bone People several years ago, and couldn't get into it. I'm certainly going to try again now.

I loved The Bone People. It's definitely on my "all-time favorites" list, but now I'll have to go read the ending again, because I don't remember what I thought about that part. I do remember I liked the book because the characters were complex--they weren't the simple "good guys/bad guys" that ...

>40: I've read The Bone People twice now and I still don't "get" the ending. But it's one I'll never forget and may even read again someday. I guess you might say I agree with marise in that it made a lasting impression on me as well.

I just finished The Bone People (link to my review) and am about to start The Mammoth Cheese by Sheri Holman for Orange January.

>7 I love The Bone People. I don't know if Hulme ever wrote anything else, but I found that novel amazing! I am reading Mudhouse Sabbath and Dr. Zhivago for my 1010 challenge.

I'm reading The Bone People for my Booker prize category (and for my book group). It's taking awhile to read! But I like it more than I expected to.

The Bone People by Kerry Hulme

Hi Darryl - just wanted to point out that Keri Hulme & The Bone People is from New Zealand not Australia as in msg #1.

I have found Bone People to be one of the most controversy-inducing books ever. I introduced it to my reading group about three years ago, where I loved it and everyone else loathed it. I have recommended it to a number of people who have hated it. And I know there are some people out there ...

Ahem... excuse the parochial noises... but Keri Hulme is a Kiwi!! Have fun with The Bone People...we gave our unread copy away to a German friend last year, who put us to shame by reading it on the plane home.

And I'll be interested in your thoughts on Bone People - I bought it a few years ago, but have never got round to reading it...

Oooh, kidzdoc, I forgot about The Bone People. I have that one, too. Maybe I'll add it to the stack. I've heard such terrific things about it.

I think I'll read Bone People by Keri Hulme, the winner of the 1985 Booker Prize, which is about a Maori artist (New Zealand) who comes upon a mute boy and his Maori step-father. I would recommend reading Carpentaria by Alexis Wright, which I read last year for the Reading Globally ...

The Bone People: A Novel, by Keri Hulme

The Bone People by Keri Hulme

The Bone People: A Novel, by Keri Hulme, read earlier this year.

The Bone People by Keri Hulme - because it aroused so much controversial discussion on my thread. Comments to follow.

Never happier than when not doing the obvious, I like the suggestion from polutropos about The Bone People, and that's what I've just started to read. The author's introduction (I don't normally read them) was so pretentious that it made me want to throw the book across the room. The preface ...

#18, #20: I'm with you on this, cmt. I have tried to read The Bone People twice - tried really hard - and neither time have I got past page 100. I find it completely unappealing. As a novel The Bone People is a mess (Hulme doesn't have the technical skill to pull it all together) but it is an interesting mess. Death in the Andes is lesser Vargas Llosa - probably he was investing more in the political arena and in A Fish in the Water at the time. Enjoyed Waterla ...

I'm going to nudge The Bone People. I read it quite some time ago, but I remember it vividly as a terrific read.

Let me most enthusiastically nudge Bone People by Keri Hulme. It won the Booker, most deservedly. I brought it, full of enthusiasm to a book group a couple of years ago and everyone in the group hated it. It deals with a difficult relationship and abuse but is still filled with hope, and ...

marise in 50 Book Challenge : englishrose60 (Sep 17, 2008, 7:22am)

I read The Bone People many years ago when it was first published in the US and it is one of those books that has stayed fresh in my mind over the years. I am glad I read it before I became a parent, though, don't know if I could now.

The Bone People was a very powerful book. I am glad I read it as well.

Finished The Bone People by Keri Hulme - set in New Zwaland; story about child abuse is well written and I am glad I have read it, even though I found some parts very distressing. Starting Shadows on Our Skin by Jennifer Johnston.

110. The Bone People by Keri Hulme - well written and intersting - I am glad I have read this book although the subject matter, child abuse, I found quite horrific at times.

Finished Notes on a Scandal - enjoyed it but felt left in limbo at the end. About to start The Bone People by Keri Hulme.

I'd recommend The Bone People by Keri Hulme for New Zealand. I'm new to the group, so I don't know where you stand on fictional islands, but One Big Damn Puzzler by John Harding is a combination of Pacific island-meets-Western culture, Shakespeare, satire/humor and more - a bit broad at ...

Just stumbled on this list. In the Families category Bone by Fae M. Ng is moving, complex story about a Chinese immigrant family, and Smiley's A Thousand Acres retells the King Lear story on a midwestern farm -- it was made into a film a while ago -- but the book is much better. I must have ...

... for non-kiwi's they think of NZ books as representing an interesting culture (judging from comments I've heard about The Bone People for example) but of course for us it's nothing new/spectacular and instead incredibly boring. And I agree about the NZ English Curriculum. After 5 years ...

Hi, The Bone People is by Keri Hulme. Your book is lonely by itself because it's linked to a different author name. There's a good chance it'll auto-combine by itself to the actual The Bone People work if you edit the data in your entry. Brilliant book by the way. It's one of my ...

Firstly you use square brackets for the touchstones. Keri Hulme - The Bone People. Also you aren't the only person to own this book. I have just done a search and apparently 749 people own it. I guess that is because you have not got the author's name entered correctly in your ...

3. The Bone People by Keri Hulme, a story of three damaged people - a man, a woman and a child - and the way they interact, damage and help each other. I feel quite ambivalent about this book. It's not an easy/pleasant book to read - it includes scenes of horrifying violence (against the ...

Having just finished The Bone People by Keri Hulme - a rather disturbing and gruelling read, I needed something a bit lighter so have started A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo. So far it is a fun read.

Three quarters of the way now - can I make 25 more books by Christmas? 76. The Bone People by Keri Hulme This was a difficult story to read. Although very well written (a Booker Prize winner) the violence in the story was quite confronting. Three "broken" people are drawn together - Kere ...

I did a little better than Rebecca and read Backlash, The Bean Trees, The Bell Jar, Beloved, The Bluest Eye, Bone, Bonjour Tristesse, and Brown Girl, Brownstones. If the word used in the title were 'important' or 'influential', I would be more in agreement with the choices. i ...

I spent a week in Barcelona with The Shadow of the Wind; now I've arrived in New Zealand with The Bone People - amazing writing in this novel; very lyrical, almost like a narrative poem in places.

I received The Bone People from paperbackswap today. Not sure when I'll get to it, but I've heard great things about this book.

The book *is* a bit of a shambles, but I think that the character development, plot and Maori subject matter make The Bone People worthwhile reading. I found it kind of weird I ended up liking the book as much as I did, because I didn't find the characters all that likeable.

Re: The Bone People and the Booker ... was the response based on the quality of the book or the subject matter? (Subject matter in the sense that the book was about Maori dealing w/modern day life, as opposed to a more "English" topic.)
