The way I'm dragging my way through The Anubis Gates I'm not holding my breath to make much progress on the pile. ... never read him, the oft-mentioned recommendation for fans of epic fantasy (as it seems you are) is George R.R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series.

A Storm of Swords - Less said about this one the better. If you've read it, then there's no need for me to tell you which scene I mean. I could not BELIEVE that happened. ... I am reading George R R Martin's A Game of Thrones, which is the first of the Song of Ice and Fire series. It definitely has "can't put down" characteristics. The chapters are short, which means you still have gas in the tank for another one. I ALWAYS find something new! The are so many I love in SoIaF, but definitively one of my all-time favourites: Storm of Swords, when Jaime saves Brienne from being raped by Hoats men. "Besides, I wanted to make the goat say 'thapphireth'." ... Now I can join the hoards of people screaming for A Dance with Dragons...

I think what I like best is the way we're given so many people's point of view - and suddenly the villains become real people, and we're on their side too, as well as that of their enemies.

I think that the best thing to say about this is that the saga continues, with more twist and turns, and with the same intensity and excellence as the first two books. ... Ice series. I finished A Clash of Kings in a week and was on to the next book. I'm about two thirds of the way through A Storm of Swords. Really wonderful books.
I just purchased The Name of the Wind - it's on the TBR stack. ... Hobbit -- Tolkein is the standard by which I judge all other fantasy novels. I am about two thirds of the way through A Storm of Swords by George R R Martin. I noticed the messages about A Feast for Crows and hope to be moving on to that book by mid-May. Tyrion Lanister in George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series. Nothing hunky about him, but a very colorful character. Most of the characters in Martin's books are fantastic, but can't get too attached...they are sure to get killed off. ... especially the Darwath series, but any of her series will do.
I recently reread all of George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire after reading A Feast For Crows, which meant that I reread the fourth book just a month after reading it the first time... that's rereadability ... #18, Gwen, I like that element of the Song of Ice and Fire books too. :) Though I thought I was going to hate the rest of the series because in the 2nd book two of my favorite characters almost died, but then they didn't so I'm still enjoying!
Ellevee, I do almost feel afraid to keep ... I love it when characters die unexpectedly as long as it is done well. One of the reasons I like A Song of Fire and Ice series is because you never know who will be knocked off next. It adds a certain element of suspense to a book when you don't know how it will end.
